Today, October 16, is World Food Day, an annual awareness campaign aimed at addressing global hunger. It marks the establishment of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945.

This year’s theme, “Water is Life, Water is Food, Leave No One Behind,” emphasizes the importance of water in ensuring food security for all.

In the current state of our economy, it is crucial to raise awareness about the global hunger crisis and promote initiatives to end hunger worldwide. Rising food inflation and commodity costs have made it difficult for millions of Nigerians to afford an adequate meal.

As members of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Production Service, and Rural Development of the 10th Assembly, we recognize agriculture’s vital role in society. We are deeply concerned about our country’s high hunger rate and the urgent need to alleviate it.

The Senate Committee fully supports the present administration’s goal of ensuring that no Nigerian goes to bed hungry. We will work with the Executive Branch to achieve this goal, and we will continue to propose legislation to improve access to adequate quantities and quality of food to meet our citizens nutritional needs.

Furthermore, we will actively engage with all stakeholders to expand agricultural production and research that will create a larger market for smallholder farmers and embrace technological advancements and innovation to ensure that our farming processes are digitalized across the agriculture value chains .

Our legislative efforts will prioritize the development of agriculture policies and regulations that foster the development of necessary market infrastructure, ensuring the availability and accessibility of affordable food.

Ultimately, our goal remains to eradicate hunger and malnutrition in our nation. I urge all stakeholders to work with us as we embark on this journey together.

Happy World Food Day.
